The 2016 Presidential campaign was so outrageous it made my head explode. When it sank to the level of Trump assuring us the size of his penis was just fine—“I guarantee you there’s no problem”—I wanted to stick a fork in my eye.

An 1868 newspaper clipping in our Family Bible inspired this piece. “A Living Headless Child” told the story of a child born without a head, his face being located in his chest. This was, reportedly, a result of trauma during his mother’s pregnancy. Her husband’s head was blown off by a cannonball during a Civil War battle and landed in her lap. There was no explanation as to why she was sitting near him in the middle of a battle. The article went on to say the five year old boy sang like a bird. Nothing like having an idea just drop in your lap!

Self portrait, for my 65th birthday. The title is from Alastair Reid’s Ounce, Dice, Trice.

Gonomony: any strange object that is difficult to name, that is curiously unlike anything else, and that serves no useful purpose. Gonomonies abound in the houses of glots.

Glot: a person who cannot bear to waste anything, who stuffs his attic full of treasures which nobody else wants, and who always eats the last chocolate in the box.

When I returned from my mom’s funeral this piece just made itself. She traveled to China some time ago and it was a highlight of her life. The doll came from San Francisco’s Chinatown; a gift from her father when I was a little girl.
